Feminist Books You Should Read

Today is March 8th, known as International Women’s Day. Today, we celebrate women’s achievement and promote a world that's diverse, equitable, and inclusive. Surrounded by strong female figures, I was raised with equally strong feminist values, regardless of the terminology. Growing up, I dived into stories portraying brave and charismatic heroines, who would inspire me to become the woman I am today. At home, I was always encouraged, challenged and offered opportunities to become whoever I wished to be. I had known no limitation to what a girl should do or be and even then, I had moments where I had to face the oppressive reality of my sex. Safety mechanism my brother would never know about, shame I would never fully get rid of, and invisible acts of violence only my kind could relate to. Chilling stories from female relatives, friends and acquaintances would remind me of my position in society.

Literature opened my eyes and educated me more than I could ever imagine but most importantly, it gave me access to so many stories that were foreign to me and my perception of the world. I gained access to a vocabulary that would allow me to put words on the universal condition of women and learning how to recognise oppression gave me the tools to resist it. That is why on this day I would like to share a list of feminist books that impacted me and shaped me into the feminist I am. Some are classics, some I got to read for my degree in English Literature.
