Affordable Books in Brighton
As a literature student, I get on average 2 novels to read per week. Most of my reading is accessible on my university’s browser and all the books are available at the library however, the number of copies is limited and I like annotating the books I work with. As I mentioned in my last Instagram post I usually pre-select the readings I want to do for each module and only buy some of the books (generally the ones I want to write about for my essays). Even then, the price of books adds up and as a student, every little saving helps.
That is why, since my first year, I’ve been hunting my classics down across different parts of towns and second-hand shops. Here’s what I’ve found so far:
London Road
Cancer Research UK Charity Shop
Oxfam Charity Shop
The North Laines
Oxfam Charity Shop
Online
Facebook Market Place
Amazon (check the used books option)
AbeBooks.co.uk
wob.com
usedbooksearch.co.uk
Besides being cheaper, buying second-hand books doesn’t cost anything to our planet. I’ve kept some of my favourite classics but since I can’t travel with 20kgs worth of books anyway, I donate most of my books at the end of the academic year to charity shops so other students get to enjoy them the following year. This circular economy benefits everyone, is good for the environment, profits go to charity and is a great way to save money. What else could we ask for? You just need some patience and a little luck to find your books but it truly is a good alternative if you're on a budget.
This year I’ve been trying to keep most of my reading digital to save space. I inherited my dad’s old Kindle which I used for a while but then moved onto my iPad because of the bigger screen. E-books are a great way to reduce paper waste and save money. Old classics’ copyrights run out after some time which is why you can find them at ridiculously low prices. Moreover, you have a large (free) selection of books you can download if you have Amazon Prime. Students also get 6 months' worth of Amazon Prime for free which is something to look into if you have a tablet with the Kindle app/a Kindle.
