An Honest Guide to Brighton Brunches

PRICES: £ 5-10 | ££ 10 | £££ >10

Brighton restaurant hardly ever disappoints yet, amongst all the options available in a town it can be difficult to select one. Moreover, I feel like the time of longtime favourite overpriced avocado on toast is past and brunch enthusiasts like myself are looking for innovative options and flavours. That is why, I concocted an honest Brighton brunch guide, composed of independent restaurants/cafés so you can have the best brunch in Brighton.

Café Coho £-££

“Proudly independent.”

Too easily missed, Café Coho’s primary location is right between the iconic Ivy and Food For Friends, on Ship Street. It took me a while to step into Coho but once I did, I became a loyal customer. Their invigorating coffee blends and tasty menu accompanied by a friendly and obliging staff compose the perfect combo to start the day. Last winter, I used to grab a cappuccino on the go at least once a week on my way to work and the team members’ smiles definitely helped me through the cold and early mornings.

Simply decorated, Coho Café doesn’t fall into my ‘Instagrammable place’ category however you’ll unequivocally want to show off their wonderful dishes once you see them. The pricing (£6-£9.5) is more than fair, especially knowing that they serve generous portions. Finally, I would highly recommend eating al fresco, or by the window to capture the Brighton Lanes experience fully.

  • Personal favourite: Coho French Toast £8.5 W/ Blueberries, smoked back bacon, banana, maple mascarpone

Lost in The Lanes £££

“Life is complicated enough. At LOST we hope you will find delicious food that meets your daily needs and a place you can stop and recharge.”

While walking through the Lanes, keep an eye open for the discreet and sophisticated Lost in The Lanes café. Hidden in Nile Street (only a few steps away from Food For Friends), LOST is minimalist and cosy. The restaurant’s philosophy revolves around simplicity, freshness and provenance, providing its customers with organic and local products. Their colourful dishes are beautifully served the apparent simplicity of the menu unveils rich and well-thought flavours. Their welcoming team and soft aesthetics create a soothing atmosphere, ideal to take a break from the noise of our everyday lives. Truly the perfect place to get lost. The place is slightly more expensive than your average Brighton brunch, with prices varying between £9 and £14 but every bite is worth the price.

  • Personal favourite: Pan-Fried Chorizo £14 New potatoes, orange braised fennel, Romesco, toasted almonds, samphire, dill (gluten-free)

Oeuf Café £-££

“If Wes Anderson had a cafe in Hove…”

Located on Third Avenue in Hove, I thought I’d still include this one on the list as it’s been the place to brunch lately! They have the most adorable door frame, perfect for that little Sunday Instagram post and a delicious menu with prices varying between £4 and £13.5. Locally sourced, the café’s goal is to present you with tasty options that won’t cost too much to the planet. The place’s playful mindset and aesthetic make it hard to resist. Additionally, I’m very much obsessed with their colourful latte.

  • Personal favourite: The Chilli Avocado £8.5 Smashed Avocado, Fried Egg & Sweet Chilli Jam

Cafe Rust £-££

"The genuine warmth and kindness of Cafe Rust’s owners is what makes it special."

Rust has locations in Brighton, Hove and Kemptown yet remains one of the city's culinary hidden gems. Its stylish rustic interior and gorgeous carved wooden tables make it the perfect place to enjoy a tasteful and delicate brunch. Cafe Rust is actually so yummy that it has been featured in the Michelin Culinary Guide a few times.

  • Personal favourite: Mango Waffles £11

17GRAMMS £-££

Located on Meeting House Lane, 17gramms is nicely put together creating a chill and trendy ambience. Their purple neon in the shape of a female torso immediately caught my eye and got me obsessed with the place. Moreover, I was charmed by their incredibly tasty dishes, surprising flavours and friendly team. In addition, I was agreeably pleased with the pricing (£6-£10), especially considering the rather posh location and fantastic food.

  • Personal favourite: Tempeh Roll £7 Smokey tempeh, humous, avocado mousse, hash brown and garlic mayo on a herb focaccia

Nowhere Man £-££

Located in the vibrant heart of Brighton, Nowhere Man is situated on Upper North Street. And trust me, Man, these are the hottest pancake stacks in town. The retro interior is warm and laid-back, offering an authentic ‘home-made’ feeling without any of the hustle - pancakes just taste better when someone flips them for you, I don’t make the rules. Prices range between £4.95 and £11.95.

  • Personal favourite: Chocolate Banana £8.25 fluffy pancakes topped with chopped banana and chocolate chunks with a side of maple butter

Food For Friends ££-£££

“We pride ourselves on serving innovative and delicious dishes that keep not only vegetarians but all lovers of good food coming back, year after year.”

Located on Prince Albert Street in the Lanes, Food For Friends is Brighton’s original award-winning vegetarian and vegan restaurant. The restaurant offers a visual and gustatory experience in a relaxed, warm and delicate environment. Their menu changes through the seasons to remain in harmony with their local providers and their products. For this reason, their brunch menu is quite limited and you might want to check it before booking a table! I love going to Food For Friends for its atmosphere although I feel like they have more options for lunch/dinner than for brunch.

  • Personal favourite: I went a while ago and their menu has changed since.

Moksha Caffe

This one my friend... So, so, so good! Located in central Brighton, just opposite St Peter's Church near London Road Moksha Caffe is easily one of Brighton's best brunch. What initially started as a humble coffee shop quickly turned into a food-led family business. Their menu is big and adventurous yet simultaneously everything seems like a safe bet while ordering. Just as simple as that!

  • Personal favourite: Huevos Benedictos £11 with free-range chorizo sausages, free-range poached eggs topped with avocado & tomato salsa, chipotle hollandaise on toasted sourdough.

Red Roaster ££-£££

“Fabulous coffee and brunch by day, the best bottomless brunch across the weekend, and devilishly good Thai food by night.”

Located at the gateway to Kemp Town, Red Roaster is probably one of the best bottomless brunch (£34.5/pp) in town. Redesigned in 2020 by the designer of the year Hana Hakim, Red Roaster prides itself on its freshly roasted coffee served in a modern botanical backdrop. When I first walked into Red Roaster I had mixed feeling about the place: the place was gorgeous, the staff friendly yet, the service was quite slow. I went for bottomless brunch and was a little disappointed by the limited choice of drinks as we could only have two drinks from two categories (Spritz or Prosecco). My vegetarian friend pointed out that there were only two veggie options on the menu, which was also disappointing. However, the food I had was amazing and the portions were great. In general, the prices are between £6.9 and £12.9 for a meal which is arguably fair for what you get. I still had a good time, definitely enjoyed the vibe of the restaurant and would absolutely recommend it to a friend!

  • Personal favourite: Big Mac Bao (x2) & Frites £12.9 Beef Shin, House Pickle, Burger Sauce, Skin-On Frites

Bonus

The Breakfast Club ££-£££

The Ivy £££

Those places are safe bets however they’re not specific to Brighton/Independent. I would still recommend them to a friend!
